Earthkind Roses

Have you ever wondered if a rose existed that was drought tolerant, mildew resistant and only needed pesticides as a last resort? Those roses do exist and are available now. They are called "Earthkind" roses and were developed by A& M University to grow well in our Texas summers. The candidates that were chosen for the earthkind designation were chosen based on certain criteria that included low irrigation needs and little or no use of pesticides and fungicides. The researchers also looked for cultivars that had a good bloom period and would grow all over Texas including areas with a high soil Ph. The roses chosen for the field tests were never sprayed, never fertilized, and never watered after the first year. They also were never pruned except to remove dead wood. Black spot was not completely eliminated, but the number of leaves dropped by the chosen cultivars was small compared to what you see in most commonly planted rose bushes.

Some of the cultivars chosen for the "Earthkind" designation included "Knockout Red" and "Knockout Pink." They are both very disease and drought tolerant. If you have some extra room in your garden it's easy to enjoy the fragrance and sight of a beautiful rose without worrying about how it looks all summer. Although all of these roses can be cut and put in a vase, don't expect to see long-stemmed florist quality roses. Those are called "Tea Roses." However, you will be surprised how fragrant the "Earthkind" roses can be.
