When to Plant a Spring Garden (2)

The year is flying by and spring is upon us. You can see the wildflowers and native perennials starting to green up. It's time to add pre-emergent to your lawn to stop those summer weeds. Apply pre-emergent in February, May and September to control grass-burs ans other weeds. Don't use the weed and feed products, as some contain an herbicide that will kill your oak trees and weaken your St. Augustine grass. Corn gluten meal is an organic solution and although more expensive, it works great as a pre-emergent. Add 20 ils per 1000 sq ft.

One of the best ways to work off some of that extra holiday weight gain is to dig in the garden and eat lots of fresh vegetables. Some veggies, like lettuce or other greens, can be ready to eat in as little as 45 days. Here are some approximate dates for spring vegetable planting. Although it recommends tomato plants for the first of March, they are usually available in February in local nurseries for the eager beavers. Look for the "early girl" variety if planting early. You can put them in a bucket with a hole in the bottom for drainage, and plant in the garden when the weather warms. Protect them from freezing temperatures. The average last frost date is March 25th. If you are lucky enough to have a southern slope to garden in, you might be able to get started a few days earlier. This schedule is good for seeds or plants.

Now (spring) - Beets, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Swiss Chard, Collards, Chinese Greens, Lettuce, English Peas, Onion Sets, Radish, Spinach, Turnip Greens, and Asparagus Crowns.

Jan 15 - Feb 25 - Irish Potatoes

March 1 - April 15 - Sweet Corn, Cucumbers, Egg Plant, Peppers, Snap Bush Beans, Pole Beans, Mustard Greens, Tomato, and Watermelon.

March 10 - March 29 - Pumpkin, Southern Peas or Field Peas, Okra, and Cantaloupe.

April 1 - May 30 - Sweet Potatoes.
