They now sell cut flower and bedding type plant seeds such as zinnias and sunflowers. As most gardeners know, it is cheaper to start your own vegetable and flower plants if you have the space and a warm well-lighted area. This is especially important for vegetable plants because of plant diseases that show up in vegetable plants purchased at big department stores. For example, the tobacco mosaic virus affects tomato and pepper plants and is spread on the hands of tobacco smokers. The disease can get a foothold when a smoker touches one tomato plant on the display rack of a department store. If you buy that six pack of baby tomato plants, you can have big problems as the virus spreads throughout your tomato crop.
